You’ve probably already heard, but in case you haven’t, 31-year-old Glee Star, Cory Monteith, passed away in his Vancouver hotel room this weekend on July 13th. It is tragic news for many of us, ‘Glee’ fans or not.
The cause of death is unknown, but his past and recent history with addiction has caused some to speculate overdose as the cause.
Cory Monteith’s death is a good example of professional and successful people with addictions. Addiction can affect anyone. He was successful, talented, smart, and trying to be the best version of himself.
As part of our efforts to change society’s stigmas and attitudes towards addiction, we believe it’s important to focus on the non-addiction part of this news. Because Cory’s death is still unknown and considered accidental, keeping his addiction out of the situation is important. It may have been suicide or side effects of prescription drugs by itself or combined with something else. Even if Cory’s death was related to his addiction, it’s important to not belittle his death because of that. It was an accident either way and should be treated as such. Even people who abuse drugs or alcohol do not intend to die. They deserve equal amounts of compassion and respect.
