ABOUT SUNSHINE COAST HEALTH CENTER

Sunshine Coast Health Center is Canada’s leader in men’s residential addiction treatment. From our beginning in March of 2004, we have served men from coast-to- coast including many from the United States and overseas.

The Sunshine Coast Health Center Difference

Sunshine Coast Health Center is one of only a handful of private residential treatment centers in Canada. Our approach to treatment is not only distinct from government programs but also positions itself as a clear alternative to traditional 12-Step programs that dominate private treatment in Canada and the United States.

For example, unlike government residential programs, clients need not wait to be "clean and sober" before being admitted because of our on-site medical detox staff with nurses, a physician, and psychiatrist. Also, while most government residential stays are a maximum of 30 days, clients at Sunshine Coast Health Center have the option of 30, 42, 60 or 90 day stays. Another distinguishing feature is our 7.5-acre waterfront campus designed to enhance the treatment experience. Amenities include massage therapy, off-site recreation, an exercise pool and a fully-equipped fitness center.

Compared to other private addiction treatment centers, Sunshine Coast Health Center is one of the few non-traditional programs in North America that goes beyond the biological, disease concept of addiction. While the debate on what causes addiction continues, Sunshine Coast Health Center believes that embracing multiple perspectives (the psychological, the social, the spiritual, and the biological) with an approach to the client based upon unconditional, positive regard will eventually become the standard in private treatment.

Serving the Community

Sunshine Coast Health Center is committed to reducing the impact of drugs and alcohol in our communities. If you represent a community group, school or employer concerned about substance abuse, our team of addiction specialists is available for group presentations. MEDIA FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who should I call if I want to interview one of your staff for an addiction story?

Please contact Kimberly Plumley of Publicity Mavens at (250)390-9285, cell (250)781-9847 or e-mail kim@publicitymavens.com.

What is different about your clients?

Our clients are mature, successful men who happen to have an addiction to drugs, alcohol or ‘process’ addictions such as gambling or pornography. While the media focuses on the extreme cases such as the Hollywood celebrity or the ‘skid row addict’, the reality of addiction is that addicts and alcoholics can just as likely be a neighbour or work colleague. In other words, successful, much-loved, contributing members of society just like you.

What are the preferred drugs of choice amongst your clientele?

Alcohol is the most common abused drug we see, followed by cocaine (particularly crack cocaine). Frequently, clients take both alcohol and cocaine. Opiates are the third most common class of drugs, with Oxycontin and other prescription painkillers growing in popularity. Interestingly, only a fraction of our clients since our opening in 2004 have presented with an addiction to crystal meth.
