Many drug treatment programs currently being offered by rehab centers worldwide include the use of various types of drugs to remove the so-called drug addiction disease. Nonethelesss, this type of approach is only effective to a certain extent. The initial goal of a drug addict seeking help is to be rid of drugs, for good.

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your excellent reporting and analysis.

I tend to approach the language of addiction from what I think of as a practical point of view.

I agree with Dr. Erickson that the language of addiction and abuse is sloppy. But once the language gets into popular use, we need it to communicate with that public.

Even Dr. Erickson succumbs: He entitled his book, "The Science of Addiction," not "The Science of Drug Dependence."

People come to me in my practice because they are "addicted" to alcohol or drugs. I find it most practical to find and treat the marital problem, the unhappiness-with-life problem or the PTSD they failed to mention initially. The "addiction" problem often eventually just "goes away," even though the client clearly met the DSM-IV criteria for dependence.

In the big picture of helping people grow and find purpose in life, avoiding imprecise terms seems less important than avoiding language that makes people victims or otherwise disempowers them.

Again, thanks,
Neill
