Since our opening in March of 2004, Sunshine Coast Health Center has grown to accommodate the diverse needs of our male clientele. While we realize that the rehabilitation program and services we offer will always be the main reason why people choose our drug rehab center, we also realize that facility location and setting can enhance or hinder the treatment experience.

Powell River’s coastal setting is high on its list of attributes. In addition to its visual appeal, Powell River’s coastline serves as one of Canada’s premier spots for year-round recreation such as hiking, biking, golfing, and fishing. If you have never been to Powell River you will be pleasantly surprised that a coastal community so close to Vancouver can feel so distant from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan life.

MAIN CAMPUS OF OUR DRUG REHAB CENTER

The Main Campus of Sunshine Coast Health Center is situated on 5 acres of oceanfront just 15 minutes south of Powell River, a town of approximately 25,000 people located 130 kilometers (85 miles) northwest of Vancouver, British Columbia.

The Main Campus includes the Administration Building that provides administrative and non-medical clinical services.  Clients visit the Administration Building for scheduled appointments with their assigned counselor, to pick up their mail and purchase select items such as long distance telephone cards.

Group counselling and family services such as the Family & Couples Program are held at the Renewal Center. The Renewal Center has a large atrium with ample natural lighting and a great view of the Pacific Ocean, making it an ideal spot for the important work of group therapy. On the bottom floor of the Renewal Center is a fully-equipped fitness center complete with free weights, weight racks, benches and cardio equipment.

The Medical Unit located on the ground floor of the Main Residence is the first place clients enter when they arrive at our drug rehabilitation center. Once clients complete alcohol and drug detoxification they are transferred to a semi-private (double occupancy) or private room upstairs. Clients with mobility issues stay on the main floor where one bedroom and bathroom is wheelchair accessible. The Main Residence also houses the dining area, client lounges, client phone room. Additional lounge space and a new indoor pool is now available following a $ 2 million expansion completed in 2008.

PRIVATE ACCOMMODATION NOW AVAILABLE AT OUR DRUG REHAB CENTER

Due to popular demand, Sunshine Coast Health Center is pleased to announce that private accommodation is now available. In providing this alternative to semi-private (2 to a room) bedrooms, clients who have sleep disorders (snoring, apnea, etc.) or simply prefer having their own room now have an option in their choice of private rehabilitation centers.

Private Rooms at Fern Road Residence

Fern Road Residence opened in the fall of 2007 and is located 5 minutes by shuttle van from the Main Campus. Fern Road is ocean front property with a low bank allowing for quick access to the beach. Fern Road Retreat has a capacity of 6 clients and is 3,000 square feet.

Our Rationale for Offering Private Accommodations

Traditionally, alcohol & drug rehabilitation centers have offered either semi-private (2 to a room) or dorm-style (4 or more) accommodations as a way to maximize revenues and balance sleeping quarters with other demands for floor space (offices, lounge areas, activity rooms, etc.). Another reason for not offering private rooms has been clinical - private rooms allow clients to isolate rather than spend time with their peer group and hinders the ability of staff to monitor clients.

While Sunshine Coast Health Center acknowledges that not all clients are appropriate for private rooms, having a one-size-fits-all policy is not necessarily in the best interests of clients who may opt out of going to drug rehabilitation simply because they do not want a roommate. Therefore, Sunshine Coast Health Center offers both private and semi-private accommodations, and assesses clients who request private accommodation beforehand to ensure they can manage with reduced supervision.

Coming to Sunshine Coast Health Center provides an opportunity for clients to recover in privacy yet still have easy access from major centers in Canada and the Pacific Northwest.

The Pros and Cons of Where an Alcohol and Drug Rehab Center is Located

The location of a drug rehab center always has both pros and cons. For example, many clients and their families prefer that treatment be as close to home as possible. This makes it easier for families to visit and provide encouragement.

The main disadvantage of staying in alcohol and drug rehab close to home is that, well, you’re still home. Many clients prefer to keep their stay in rehab confidential and being near home puts clients on edge fearing they will meet an acquaintance. Another disadvantage of getting addiction treatment close to home is the lure of “old haunts” where clients do their drinking or drugging. The term “getting out of Dodge” refers to the need for many clients to make a complete break from the people, places and things that are such a big part of using their drug of choice. An often overlooked advantage of going away is the chance to meet new people from other communities that while living in different worlds, share similar personal experiences with drug and alcohol addiction.

At Sunshine Coast Health Center, we believe that clients benefit from having the best of both worlds: intensive programming and a therapeutic setting. We believe clients struggling with an alcohol or drug addiction need to “pull out all the stops” when it comes to living a life of recovery.  That means making many difficult changes to lifestyle and relationships. As a drug rehab center, Sunshine Coast Health Center is also making sure that we are providing the best possible treatment experience for our clients.

Sunshine Coast Health Center is one of only a handful of drug rehab centers outside of Florida or California with direct beach access. With five acres to enjoy, clients will benefit from being so close to nature physically as well as spiritually.
